SteelDECK 102

Heavy-Load Composite Decking for Long-Span & High-Capacity Floor Construction

SteelDECK 102 is purpose-engineered for the most demanding composite flooring and heavy-load construction applications. Its 102mm crest height — the deepest profile in the SteelDECK range — delivers the longest unpropped spans and highest structural load capacity available in composite decking

Originally developed as the natural choice for sacrificial (permanent) shuttering applications where traditional alternatives are inadequate, SteelDECK 102 has become the go-to profile for large-span industrial floors, heavy-load mezzanines, bridge decks, and plant platforms subject to concentrated equipment loads.

The deep crest allows significant joist savings by reducing the number of secondary beams required — lowering total structural steel tonnage and speeding up the erection programme. The profile performs stably on all standard slab concrete mixes and can be used as an immediate working platform after laying, before concrete is poured.

Road Safety Guardrails — 2-Wave & 3-Wave Metal Barriers

Completing the structural safety product range, our hot-dip galvanised metal guardrail barriers provide certified road-safety and perimeter protection for industrial sites, highways, car parks and warehouse access routes. Available in 2-wave (W-beam) and 3-wave (Thrie-beam) profiles — both designed to absorb and redirect vehicle impact energy in a controlled and predictable manner.

Industrial Standard

2-Wave Metal Guardrail

The 2-Wave (W-Beam) guardrail is a longitudinal safety barrier designed for installation on road shoulders and median reserves.

A continuous horizontal 2-wave beam, oriented to traffic, is supported at regular vertical posts with a breakaway bolt connection — designed to break in a controlled manner at a defined applied force to absorb impact energy and reduce injury risk to vehicle occupants.

Hot-dip galvanised

3-Wave Metal Highway Guardrail

The 3-Wave (Thrie-Beam) guardrail is a heavy-duty highway safety barrier developed for high-speed road environments

The 3-wave beam is fixed to each post through an intermediate element that serves both as a spacer and an energy absorber — significantly increasing the barrier's capacity to manage vehicle impact loads compared to the standard 2-wave profile.

Understanding Steel Decking & Mezzanine Floor Systems

How Composite Metal Decking Works

Composite metal decking — the core of every steel decking mezzanine system — works by combining the tensile strength of the profiled steel deck with the compressive strength of the concrete slab poured on top.

Once concrete cures, the trapezoidal flutes in the SteelDECK profile create a mechanical interlock between steel and concrete, allowing the two materials to work together as a single composite element

This dramatically increases structural efficiency versus either material acting alone — enabling thinner slabs, lighter secondary beams and reduced foundation loads for the same imposed load capacity.

Mezzanine Floor Design & Load Calculations

Every warehouse mezzanine and industrial raised platform must be individually designed to the specific imposed loads, spans and headroom of the installation. Standard mezzanine floor systems are designed for imposed loads of 3.5–7.5 kN/m², covering storage, office and light industrial use.

Heavy-duty industrial platforms for pallet racking, automated storage systems or large plant and equipment can be designed for 10 kN/m² and above.

Our structural engineers calculate the primary and secondary steelwork, composite deck design and column sizing based on your layout drawing, load requirements and building survey.

Secondary Roof Structure Integration

In new-build industrial buildings, the mezzanine floor system is designed in coordination with the primary portal frame structure and the secondary roof purlin system.

The SteelDECK composite floor profiles interface directly with the primary steel frame columns and floor beams, while Z, C and Sigma rafter purlins manage the roof structure above. This integration — from floor deck to roof purlin — ensures the entire secondary steel structure is co-ordinated, structurally efficient and sourced from a single supply chain

Advantages of Z Purlins: Ability to span lengths. No site drilling or cutting required. Assured dimension & strength. Low transport cost due to decreased weight.

Gable End Specialist

L Purlin (Angle Section)

Traditional reinforced concrete floors require extensive temporary propping, conventional steel bar reinforcement and removal of formwork once concrete has cured — adding significant time, cost and site hazard to every floor pour.

Composite metal decking eliminates all three: the SteelDECK profile is self-supporting during construction on standard spans, acts as its own reinforcement and remains permanently in place as the finished floor soffit.

The result is construction time reductions of 25–40% versus conventional reinforced concrete, with measurable savings in concrete volume, reinforcement weight, temporary works and site labour

Where Steel Decking & Mezzanine Systems Are Specified

A complete secondary steel system extends beyond purlins. Gutter sections manage rainwater drainage, sag rods provide lateral alignment for purlins and girts, and foundation bolts anchor the entire structure securely to its concrete base.

Frequently Asked Questions

In most jurisdictions, internal mezzanine floors within existing industrial or commercial buildings are classified as permitted development and do not require full planning permission. However, building regulations approval and certified structural calculations are required in all cases. We provide full structural design calculations, general arrangement drawings and technical documentation — giving your building control surveyor everything needed to issue building regulations approval. We advise checking with your local planning authority for any site-specific requirements before commencing design.

Standard mezzanine floors are typically designed for 3.5–7.5 kN/m² imposed load, covering storage, office and light industrial uses. Heavy-duty industrial platforms for pallet racking, automated storage and retrieval systems or large plant and equipment can be designed for 10 kN/m² and above. Our structural engineers will calculate the required load capacity, primary and secondary steelwork sizing, composite deck profile and column design for your specific application, layout and loading.

A typical 500m² single-level storage mezzanine can be installed in 3–5 working days once structural drawings are approved and all components are on site. The composite steel deck profile eliminates conventional scaffolding and temporary propping — significantly accelerating the installation programme. We provide a full project programme, including design, fabrication and installation milestone dates, at the quotation stage. Larger or multi-tier mezzanine systems are individually programmed based on scope.

The numbers refer to the crest height of the profiled steel deck in millimetres. SteelDECK 52 (52mm crest, 1030mm maximum cover width) is best suited to shorter spans and light-to-medium imposed loads — including mezzanine floors, light commercial slabs and infrastructure applications. SteelDECK 76 (76mm crest) is the most versatile general-purpose profile for mid-range spans in multi-storey buildings, warehouses and general industrial applications. SteelDECK 102 (102mm crest) achieves the longest unpropped spans and highest load capacity in the range — specified for heavy industrial floors, plant platforms, bridge decks and applications with pallet racking or concentrated equipment loads.

Yes — all SteelDECK profiles (52, 76 and 102) can be used as a safe working platform immediately after they are laid and fixed to the primary steel frame, before concrete is poured. This eliminates the need for conventional scaffolding and temporary work platforms beneath the slab — significantly reducing site cost, hazard and programme duration. The working platform capacity is confirmed in the load charts and design documentation provided with each project.
